David Rovics: Songs for Justice
by Heather K. (Jun.26.2003)

I was pretty upset. We were running late. The darn mapquest directions weren't very good, throwing us all over the place so we had to invent a new way to get to Rochester. But, when we got to the Quaker House meeting place, David Rovics was in the middle of a song, and a nice crowd of about 25 people were listening to his wonderful activist songs.

David Rovics' music has a clever way of incorporating politics, history, and humor. I was delighted to hear Alligator Song, which he says he'd like to attract frat boys on. It's a hilarious song about how pollution, PBC's, etc, have been linked to Alligator Dicks shrinking, and that the Alligator is an indicator species. This is a real research project occuring in Florida.

He sang many songs, including "We Just Want the World", "Drink of the Death Squads" (Another of my favorites), "The Pirate Radio Show", "Hang a Flag in the Window", "Bomb Ourselves", "Shut Them Down", and, just a ton of good songs to make me feel like there are people out there that have a clue as to what is really going on out there. My take on him, is that he is the Michael Moore of music. Really. He has a wonderful sense of humor and straight up activism.

During the "Pirate Radio Song", I learned that there were many Rochester IMC's in the audience. I couldn't help but wonder if my posts about David Rovics on their site over a year ago, got them interested....

Well, so anyways, Rovics finished, and received a generous applause. He stayed around and talked to us for awhile. I went up and told him I was Heather from Silver Creek (though, now I live in Buffalo), and he remembered me. It was awesome. Then I told him we got lost on the way, ending up as a 2 and a half hour drive.

    "From which direction?"

    "West, near Buffalo."

"Oh, that's the wrong direction to be coming from, out in the sticks."

Wow, Buffalo is the sticks... lol. I told you, he has a great sense of humor.

Afterwards, he went and hung out with some of the people who hosted the event. I couldn't go, because it was late, and we had a long drive home. I was just happy to see a large part of the concert. It was an awesome experience.
